The Liwan community itself was launched by Dubai Holding in 2006 and has developed into a large freehold residential district in Dubailand. It sits close to Dubai Silicon Oasis and Academic City and provides access to major roads including Mohammed Bin Zayed Road and Dubai–Al Ain Road.
